From the Principal – Term 3, Week 1

Jul 19, 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome back to the start of another very busy and fun-filled term at Mary Mac! It’s hard to believe that half of the year has already come and gone. Term 3 is always an exciting time in our community as we have a number of big events to celebrate, with the highlight of course being the Mary MacKillop Week activities in Week 4.

Awareness/Compassion Reflection Nobody has ever become poor by giving!

NAIDOC Day Today we celebrated NAIDOC Day with a beautiful liturgy in our hall. This was then followed up with numerous activities in the classrooms which included art and literature activities as well as games and dances. The students paired up with their buddy classes to learn about the significance of NAIDOC Day, especially as there is so much focus on it at the moment. All students were encouraged to come to school in free dress wearing the NAIDOC colours. I would like to extend a big thank you to Mrs Glenister Bielby, Mrs Robertson, Mrs Lanham, Mrs Harris, Mr Boyce, Mrs Mueller and Mrs Thompson who did a lot of work behind the scenes preparing for today.

P&F Meeting The meeting for Term 3 takes place this Friday morning in the staffroom straight after the assembly. All welcome.

Edu Dance  At last, all the Gold classes plus Kindy Blue get to experience the joy of the Edu Dance programme which commences next Monday 24 July in the hall.  Please make a note in your diaries for Monday 18 September when the Edu Dance concert will be held. More details about the concert will be released later in the term.

Interschool Cross Country Our squad has been selected and now they get the chance to compete against 8 other Catholic schools. The event will take place next Tuesday 25 July at UWA Sports Park, McGillvray Rd, Mt Claremont from 10am. Parents and grandparents are most welcome to come along and support our runners.

Confirmation Retreat The Year 6 students are now in the final stages of preparing to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation. They will be participating in a special retreat day, filled with reflections and activities, next Wednesday 26 July. The day will be led by the 24:7 Youth Ministry team. Please keep our Year 6 students in your prayers as they get closer to the big day on 19 and 20 August in our parish.

Curtin Speech Programme This term, 7 students in Kindy Blue will get some extra support from our colleagues at Curtin University. This programme has proven to be very successful so far, and by the end of the year, I am hoping that around 30 of our students would have received extra assistance in this area. It has been a positive experience working in partnership with Curtin University in a programme which has mutual benefits for both parties.

APPA Conference During Week 3, I will be attending the Australian Primary Principals’ Conference in Hobart. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn from my colleagues around the country who are also navigating their schools through challenging times. Please see Lisa Liebregts or Tim Maxwell in my absence.

Catholic Day As I said at the beginning of this newsletter, it is a very busy term. Therefore, we have chosen Monday 7 August as our annual Catholic Day to have a mini break. Please note that this is a student free day. All Catholic schools are granted one day per year as recognition for the extra work we do with activities on the weekends relating to our faith commitment. Term 3 promises to be another very busy and productive time in our beautiful community. Please feel free to join in the fun with us.

Yours sincerely
Laurie Bechelli
