Does your child help care for their brother or sister, or someone else in your home?

Our school is taking a proactive approach to supporting young carers. With the support of the Young Carer team at Carers WA this year and beyond, we want to do our best as a school and community to support all of our young carer students in our school. On average at least 1 in 11 young people in Australia have some level of responsibility as a carer in their home, equating to an average of 2-3 young carers in every classroom. Young carers provide care to a loved one or sibling who may have a chronic illness, disability, mental health, alcohol or other drug dependency or who is frail aged.

We would like to invite young carers from year 4-6 along to attend our very first Young Carers Peer Support Group catch-up! This is a safe space for anyone interested to chat with others in similar situations, engage in fun activities, build on their self-care skills and receive support from their peers at Mary MacKillop. We plan to meet once per month for approximately an hour during the school day.

Please advise our school social worker, Lisa Mueller if you would like your child to participate, or contact Lisa if you would like some more information. Lisa.Mueller@cewa.edu.au

The Year of St Joseph

Pope Francis has proclaimed 2021 as the Year Of St Joseph. Our Holy Father describes Saint Joseph as a beloved, tender and loving father, an obedient and accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous. We are encouraged to pray the following prayer.

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Faction Swimming Carnival

Year Four to Six students gathered at Bayswater Waves for the annual swimming carnival last Friday 5 March. MacKillop (Blue) on 806 points had a convincing win after finishing third last year. McCormack (Yellow) 682 points, finished runners up for the second year in a row, followed by last year’s champions O’Sullivan (Green) 554 points and McDonald (Red) 521 points.

All children had a fun day in the water swimming in competitive events or in novelty events for less experienced or non-swimmers. Mr. Power would like to acknowledge and thank the school staff, Mercy College students and parents who assisted during the carnival day. Congratulations to the following students who claimed champion and runner-up champion awards.

Yr 4 Champions – Kate Arthur & Noah McGrath
Runners-up – Laura Young & Ari Lam
Yr 5 Champions – Makayla Phan & Samuel Brown
Runners-up – Annabel Moyle & Jacob Carlson
